Music Society wine tasting Sunday

LEWISTON — The Maine Music Society will hold its 18th annual Wine Tasting Fundraiser from 2 to 4:30 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 9, at the Franco Center.

Susan Hall of The Vault and Edmond Gay of The Franco Center will offer insight and pairing suggestions for the afternoon’s sampling of white, red and dessert wines and an assortment of hors d’oeuvres provided by many of L/A’s fine bakeries and restaurants.

John Corrie, artistic director of the Maine Music Society, and the MMS Chamber Singers, an acapella division of the Androscoggin Chorale, will warm hearts and set the mood for Valentine’s Day with a selection of favorite love songs.

A mini-raffle includes a variety of items and gift certificates donated by local businesses.

Tickets are $25 in advance, $30 at the door.

MEREDA’s breakfast event Feb. 12

BANGOR — The theme of the Maine Real Estate & Development Association’s Morning Menu Breakfast Event from 7:30 to 9 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 12, will be “Cashing in on the New Regulations: Real Estate Tax Planning.” It will be held at Hollywood Casino Hotel.

It will be an informative overview of how cost segregation and asset baseline studies can offer significant immediate and future tax benefits.

Annual USM job fair is Feb. 12

PORTLAND — The University of Southern Maine will host its annual job fair from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 12, in the Sullivan Gym on the Portland campus. It is a free event open to all students, alumni and the public.

The fair offers students and the public the opportunity to meet and network with potential employers in an informal setting. This year over 50 employers including Mercy Hospital, AAA Northern New England and TD Bank are expected.

Farm business planning workshop

UNITY — MOFGA and Richard Wiswall will hold a Business Planning Workshop from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday, Feb. 17, and from 9 a.m. to noon Tuesday, Feb. 18, at MOFGA’s Common Ground Education Center.

The workshop is designed to help those who have one year of production data and are ready to sharpen their pencil and better understand their business finances. Participants should bring pen, paper, a calculator and, if possible, financials from the 2013 season, including crop plan, income and expenses and sales figures.

Maine Master Naturalist program

AUGUSTA — The Maine Master Naturalist Program is accepting applications for its 2014-15 program session to be held at the Viles Arboretum. The course provides 72 hours of classroom and outdoor experience, focusing on field natural history: geology, identification of flora and fauna, wetland and upland ecology, ecological principles and teaching methods.

By the end of this certification program, participants will have developed the skills to lead a walk, present a talk and provide outreach to schools, land trusts, nature centers and parks.

The training, which runs from June 14, 2014, through May 27, 2015, includes 10 evening classes and seven Saturdays. Tuition of $350 covers course texts, hand-outs, and supplies.
