GREENWOOD — Mt. Abram Ski Resort will host its first Olympic Games from Sunday, Feb. 16, to Friday, Feb. 21.

Jamie Schectman, director of marketing and community development, said the competition was conceived by Mt. Abram head coach Courtney Poston. The event kicks off at 6 p.m. Sunday with the resort’s annual Torchlight Parade.

“After skiers head down the slopes with the torches, there’s going to be a family-style spaghetti dinner,” Schectman said.

The five days of games begin Monday and include freestyle, slalom and giant slalom skiing, scavenger hunt and mountain rally.

Schectman said will be other events occurring at the same time at the Olympic Games, including the following:

* The Bryant Pond 4-H camp will host three Outdoor Enrichment Programs from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 18, Thursday, Feb. 20, and Saturday, Feb. 22. The Tuesday session will focus on wilderness survival skills, the Thursday session will focus on wildlife habits and habitats, and the Saturday session will focus on archery.

The cost of the program is $30 and will include a lunch. Those interested in signing up can do so at the Mt. Abram Child Care and Adventure Center.

* The annual Kirkpatrick-Fitch Memorial Ski Race will take place Saturday, Feb. 22, when skiers will have the chance to compete in honor of “the dedicated patrollers and friends who embody and created the family spirit at Mt. Abram,” Schectman said.

The race will cost $10 to enter, with all proceeds going to the Maine Cancer Foundation.

While the Kirkpatrick-Fitch Memorial Ski Race is happening, Schectman said the annual Mt. Abram Ski Club auction will be held at 5 p.m. in the Main Lodge.

“The ski club auction is a fundraiser for an awesome cause,” Schectman said. “It’s guaranteed to be a great time.”
