ANDOVER — A group of residents is holding a benefit dinner for a local couple at 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 22, at the Town Hall.

Resident Carolyn Merrill said she, her husband and several other residents organized the benefit for Cindy and Steve Simmons to help them with a large hospital bill.

“Cindy had a major surgery in Boston,” Merrill said. “One thing about Steve and Cindy is that whenever there was a benefit in town, they’d be the first to join in and would always donate something. A bunch of us thought it’d be nice to pay it back.”

The event will start at 1 p.m. with an auction, followed by a spaghetti dinner from 5 to 6 p.m. The food will be provided by The Good Food Store in Bethel, Merrill said.

“Cindy works at The Good Food Store, and when I called them to ask if they wished to donate anything, they offered to do all the food,” Merrill said. “It’s just incredible to get help like that.”

After the spaghetti dinner, entertainment will begin at 7 p.m. with Teachers Lounge Mafia improv group performing skits, and music by Pete Coolidge.

“Pete Coolidge is a really good friend, and Steve has played with Pete in his band,” Merrill said. “Everyone has been really great about stepping up and helping out Steve and Cindy.

“I think at times like these, we can see that when someone in the community needs help, there are people who will step up and help,” she said. “This town is good like that.”
