As the high school hockey playoffs get underway in earnest this week, a handful of players have been named semifinalists for Class A’s top individual honor.
Kyle Lemelin and Matt Poulin of Lewiston High School are among eight players in the running for the Travis Roy Award, given annually to the top player and sportsman in Class A hockey.
Lemelin has 13 goals and 15 assists for the Blue Devils this season, while his teammate Poulin has 17 goals and 11 assists.
Justin Courtney of Bangor and Cam Heatley of Brunswick are the other two semifinalists from Eastern Class A
Nik Lemieux of Biddeford High School, Cam Loiselle of Scarborough High School, Andre Clement of Falmouth High School and Alex Fallon of Thornton Academy are the four semifinalists from Western Class A.
The list will be whittled down to four — two each from Eastern and Western Class A — and the award will be presented at the annual Maine Class A hockey coaches’ banquet following the season.
The award is named for Travis Roy, the former Yarmouth resident and North Yarmouth Academy player who was paralyzed from injuries sustained 11 seconds into his first shift at Boston University in 1995. Roy lives and works in Boston, where he is a motivational speaker who works with the charity that bears his name, which raises money and provides grants for research and medical equipment for people with spinal injuries.
- Lewiston’s Kyle Lemelin holds back Scarborough’s Jack Callahan as he tries to get at the puck in the first period of a game in Lewiston earlier this season. Lemelin was named a semifinalist for the Travis Roy Award on Monday.
- Matt Poulin of Lewiston puts a shot past Cony/Monmouth goalie Thomas Small during the third period of a game in Lewiston earlier this season. Poulin was named a semifinalist for the Travis Roy Award on Monday.
