FRYEBURG – A woman and two children escaped injury Wednesday afternoon after a car slammed into the front of an ambulance carrying the family to a New Hampshire hospital.

Police said 74-year-old Alfred Berube of Fryeburg may have fallen asleep shortly before his car crossed the centerline and plowed into the ambulance on Route 302.

It happened at about 3:30 p.m., police said, as Fryeburg Rescue was transporting a 14-month-old boy to Memorial Hospital in North Conway, N.H. The child’s 36-year-old mother and 3-year-old brother were also riding in the ambulance, investigators said.

Police said the ambulance was traveling with no lights and siren, headed west on Route 302. As the ambulance approached Hidden Pines Lane, police said, it was struck nearly head-on by a Volvo headed east.

Police said there was extensive damage to both vehicles.

Two additional Fryeburg Rescue vehicles were called to assess the five occupants of the original ambulance, police said, as well as Berube. All occupants of the ambulance were examined and found not to be uninjured. The 14-month-old boy, who was not identified, continued to Memorial Hospital in a second ambulance.

Berube was taken to Bridgton Hospital where he was being treated for non-life threatening injuries, police said.

Police blocked off a section of Route 302 while emergency vehicles were responded and an investigation got underway. The investigation continued Wednesday night, although police said there were indications that Berube had fallen asleep at the wheel.

The woman who had been traveling in the ambulance with her children was not identified.
