1964 – 2014

LEWISTON — Janie M. Lucas, 49, formerly of 38 Gammon Road in Buckfield, died Monday, Feb. 10, at d’Youville Pavilion in Lewiston, following a five-year battle with cancer.

Born in Lewiston on April 15, 1964, she was the daughter of Roderick and Cynthia Bellavance Newton. She was educated in local schools and a graduate of Leavitt High School, Class of 1982. Prior to retiring due to illness, she was employed for many years as a medical secretary.

Janie was an avid scrapbooker, loved tending her flower gardens and was a devoted mother to her son, Evan, who was the light of her life. Her long illness gave her perspective and on March 6, 2011, she wrote: “Make that phone call, have that conversation. Send that letter. Tell that person you love them more than anything. Tomorrow is a gift, not a promise.”

Besides her son, Evan, of Buckfield, survivors include her father and “second mom,” Roderick and Patricia Newton of Turner; her grandmother, Elsie Day, of Turner; four brothers, Lawrence and wife, Kendra Newton, of Sumner, Michael and wife, Kelly Newton, of Buckfield, Terrance and wife, Tracey Richardson-Newton, of Saco and Mathew Newton of New York; and three sisters, E. Lorraine and husband, Lloyd Green, of Norway, Patsy and husband, Rock Stevens, of King, N.C., and Trudy Newton and fiancé, Shawn O’Connor, of Belgrade.

She was predeceased by her mother; an infant son, Ryan Lucas; and a brother, John Newton.
