1925 – 2014

SABATTUS — Clara E. Bullen, 89, of Sabattus, passed away on Thursday, Feb. 27, at her home, surrounded by her loving family.

She was born in Rumford on Jan. 20, 1925, a daughter of the late Charles and Mary (Desroches) Porter. She attended school in Rumford, graduating from Stephens High School in 1943. She went on to further her education, attending Vesper George School of Art in Boston and Bliss Business School in Lewiston.

Clara served her country in World War II in the U.S. Navy as a member of the WAVES. After the war, she married William B. Bullen on Nov. 22, 1948; they were happily married until his death on Aug. 7, 1987.

She was a woman of great faith and was a member of Our Lady of The Rosary Catholic Church in Sabattus. In her younger years, she enjoyed swimming, traveling and going to family functions. As she grew older, she loved reading, watching “Gunsmoke,” spending time with her family and watching the family pets.

Clara is survived by her daughter, Pam Averill and husband, Mark, of Sabattus; two grandchildren, Austin and Kelsey Averill of Sabattus; her fiancé, David Cleere; a sister, Louise Beaulieu, of California, and several nieces and nephews.

Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, William B. Bullen; three brothers, Fred, Billy and Frances Porter; and a sister, Dora May Richards.

The family would like to express special thanks to Beacon Hospice: Jamie, Carol, Beth, Rose and Bev, for the loving care they gave Clara during her illness. She will be sadly missed by so many, as she touched so many hearts.
