BOWDOIN — Russell A. Rogers (Shorty), 87, of Bowdoin passed away unexpectedly at his home on Saturday, March 1,  surrounded by his family.

He was born in Bowdoin on Jan. 28, 1927, to the late Erland and Gladys Rogers. He attended schools in Bowdoin and Brunswick, graduating from Brunswick High School in 1944.

Russell married the love of his life, Barbara Frank, on April 12, 1952. He and Barbara celebrated 50 years of marriage. Russell retired from the Pejepscot Paper Mill in 1982. Over the years he also worked odd jobs with friends and spent many years working the family farm and gardens with his father.

Known for his great smile, laughter and quiet sense of humor, he loved spending time with his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and friends. He enjoyed the outdoors, skating with his children, camping with family and friends, producing maple syrup and reading. He and Barbara enjoyed many years attending dances with friends, playing Bingo, taking cruises on the Scotia Prince and then occasional trips to the Bangor Casino. He was an avid Boston Red Sox and Bruins fan.

He is survived by his six children, Robert Rogers and wife, Theresa, of West Long Branch, N.J., Shirley Carter of Bowdoin, Sandra Smith and husband, Bill, of West Bath, Deborah Obptande and husband, David, of Bowdoin, Diane Springer and husband, Walter, of Bowdoin and Donna Megquier of Huntington, W. Va., by whom he will be sadly missed. He had 18 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren. He also leaves behind brother and sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews and a host of others who played important roles in his life.

He was predeceased by his wife, Barbara, and his sisters, Eleanor Purington and Marjorie Coombs.

ROGERS — Russell A., 87, died March 1, at his home in Bowdoin. Per his request, there will be no services.
