PORTLAND (AP) — The Cumberland County sheriff is investigating a security breach at the county jail in which a female inmate sneaked out of her maximum security cell for a sexual encounter in a male inmate’s cell.

Sheriff Kevin Joyce said the woman got out of her cell late Saturday morning, and even though the two cells are close by, she got through three additional locked doors in order to reach the male inmate.

Joyce said the two spent about 3½ hours together before a guard discovered them during a random security check.

The inmates’ names were not made public and Joyce did not say why they were in the Portland jail.

Joyce said he is reviewing security protocol to determine whether human error, policy error, or a mechanical issue is to blame.
