LEWISTON — Lyceum Gallery will open a new exhibit, “Satire, Caricature, Humor: Modern Cartoons,” on Friday, March 21. Seven artists will exhibit work spanning satiric posters to comic strips and game cards.

The term cartoon originated in the Middle Ages and first described a preparatory drawing for a piece of art, such as a painting, fresco or tapestry. In the 19th century, cartoon came to refer to humorous illustrations that satirized current events. By the early-20th century the term generally referred to comic strips and animated films.

The featured artists are: Tom Brudzinski, Dan Cake, Benjamin Chase, Michael LaRiccia, Evan Narzow, Victoria Salvano, and Noel Smith. Their medium ranges from pencil and ink to watercolor and digital.

The exhibit will continue through April 18. Gallery hours are Thursday-Saturday 11a.m.-2 p.m., Friday 5 p.m.-8 p.m. and by appointment. Lyceum Gallery is at 49 Lisbon Street. For more information, visit www.lyceumgallery.com, email lyceumgallery@me.com, or call 207-576-4805.
