BIDDEFORD (AP) — An official with a Massachusetts-based supermarket chain says its first store in Maine has been so well received that it would consider opening more stores in the state.

David McLean, operations manager at Demoulas Supermarkets Inc. in Tewksbury, Mass., which owns the Market Basket chain, say the company is always looking at its options. He did not specify where the chain might consider expanding in Maine.

Market Basket opened its first Maine store in Biddeford last year and McLean told the Portland Press Herald (http://bit.ly/1nmzH5d ) the response from shoppers has been “astonishing.”

Market Basket’s store is the largest supermarket in Maine at 107,000 square feet. Shoppers are drawn by a wide array of products and low prices.

The private company has about 70 stores, mostly in Massachusetts and New Hampshire.
