A change in the boundaries of two local House District led Orono councilors to last week vote to do away with one of its voting wards.
During legislative redistricting, the boundaries for House Districts 123 and 124 were redrawn. That change, coupled with an upgrade in voting machines, led town staff to consult with the State of Maine Elections Bureau to review Orono’s voting districts.
That review led to the decision to eliminate Ward 2, and instead merge it into Ward 1, Precinct 3. At the same time, new boundary lines were drawn, following Bennoch Road and Noyes Drive, for Precints 1 and 3 of Ward 1.
For future November general and referendum elections, voting will be held in all three precincts of Ward 1. In all other elections, voting will be held in precincts 1 and 3 only.
