PARIS — A pickup truck hauling an empty trailer hit a patch of ice on Route 119 on Friday and crashed over a guardrail.

Joel Chapman, 35, of Sumner said he was traveling west when he hit a patch of ice and briefly swerved into the oncoming lane. He said he overcorrected and hit the snow-encased guardrail, grinding along it for about 100 feet before pitching over the bank.

His truck came to the “smoothest, slowest stop” he could imagine, largely thanks to more than a foot of light snow from Wednesday’s storm, he said.

No injuries were reported and the truck was removed from the deep snow by a pair of tow trucks.

Paris Police Officer Bill Cook estimated damage to the guardrail at between $5,000 and $10,000.

Chapman said he was unsure how much damage was done to his truck, but it was still running when he finally came to a stop.
