HEBRON — Hebron Academy heralded the return of “Pink in the Rink” earlier this February when the young ladies of Lumberjack hockey raised funds and awareness for breast cancer at their annual “Pink Socks” game.

Players sported pink uniforms and raised just under $1,000 in one single day for Maine Breast Cancer Coalition in Bangor. The program is running six years strong but took shape when Hebron parents Mr. and Mrs. Aaskov P ’11 generously donated pink jerseys in 2011.

“I am really excited to celebrate Hebron’s sixth year of ‘Pink in the Rink.’ The girls took hold of the idea and run with it, and it’s something that they look forward to every year,” said Hebron Academy Varsity Girls’ Hockey Head Coach Katie Ftorek. “’Pink in the Rink’ is not only a memorable event, but it’s also a way for Hebron students to learn about service and community outreach.”

The “Pink Socks” initiative has been in place at the academy for more than five years, originating with Hebron’s varsity girls’ hockey team, inspired by a similar program at another school. In the campaign’s first run, players donned only pink hockey socks. Since its induction, “Pink in the Rink” has generated thousands of dollars towards the Maine Breast Cancer Coalition in Bangor through student-organized raffles, bake sales and other programs.

Pink pops up often at Hebron Academy. This past October the school formed a giant, human pink ribbon for a special photo opportunity and participated in Portland radio station Q97.9’s Cans for a Cure can and bottle drive, rallying the community to donate a ton of cans to the cause. The efforts totaled nearly $500 toward Cans for a Cure – an estimated 10,000 cans. In past years the boys’ varsity basketball team and girls’ varsity soccer teams have hosted “pink” games to raise awareness.
