NORWAY — Fire destroyed a car on Patch Mountain Road on Tuesday morning, but the driver was not hurt.
Mike Walker, 30, of Norway said he was on his way back from his parents’ Greenwood home when he noticed smoke coming from underneath the car’s hood and into the interior. He opened the engine compartment to find flames, he said, and retreated to a safe distance and called 911.
Oil was spilled on the engine during recent maintenance on the car, Walker said, but he was unsure if that is what caused the fire.
Firefighters were called shortly before 10:30 a.m. and spent about 30 minutes dousing the flames in the 2002 Subaru WRX.
Norway fire Chief Dennis Yates said the cause of the fire was mechanical and he does not expect an investigation.
