St. Mary’s Hospital rededication

LEWISTON — The Most Rev. Robert Deeley, Bishop of Portland, will lead a ceremony recognizing St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center’s 125 year commitment to the community. A rededication of the hospital will take place at 1 p.m. Wednesday, April 9. Artifacts from St. Mary’s history will be on display in Lepage Small Conference Room.

In 1888, 10 years after establishing a school in Lewiston, the Sisters of Charity of Saint-Hyacinthe, Quebec purchased a farm and 36 acres of land from Sarah Golder at the corner of Pine and Sabattus streets and established a hospital to serve the Lewiston-Auburn community. The sisters moved into the farm with 40 orphans, and early in 1889 they opened a 30-bed hospital. The “Sisters’ Hospital” was dedicated as the first Catholic hospital in Maine in April 1889 by Bishop James A. Healy.
