CLAREMONT, N.H. (AP) — The city of Claremont, N.H., is in a dispute with the state over whether it can use ATVs on rail trails.
The city heard this week from the state and federal transportation departments that the use of ATVs was banned when the city accepted a grant to develop the trails more than 20 years ago.
Claremont put up more than $64,000 to buy 2.7 miles of abandoned railroad bed from the state in the 1990s. It got more than $200,000 in federal money to develop the trails.
City Attorney Jane Taylor said she has a letter from then-City Manager Robert Porter asking state officials if there were any restrictions on the use of the trails. An answer from the DOT says there were none.
