LEWISTON — Author Ben Mikaelsen of Montana — who adopted and raised a bear and lived with homeless people — will speak to students and the public Monday, April 14, at Lewiston Middle School.

Mikaelsen is the author of “Touching Spirit Bear” and other books. Eighth-graders read the book this past fall and were so touched by the novel that they wanted to meet the author.

Working with English teacher Tiffany Jones and others, students raised money to bring Mikaelsen to Lewiston. He will speak to several classes during the day.

Mikaelsen’s novels have been carried by Scholastic and Troll book fairs, his articles have been published worldwide and he has been featured on “Jack Hanna’s Animal Adventures” and on German television.

He lives in a log home near Bozeman, Mont. From 1984 to 2010 he lived with Buffy, a 750-pound black bear he adopted and raised. Buffy died in 2010.

At 3:30 p.m. in the cafeteria, he’ll talk about the stories behind his stories. Experiences he’ll share include raising Buffy, living with the homeless, working with dolphins, attending Space Camp, going undercover with drug enforcement agents and living with the Maasai in Africa.
