Lewiston’s new baseball team actually took shape and life, Tuesday morning, when “Red” McMahon with his coterie of old-timers and hopeful recruits limbered their muscles on A. A. A. park, Auburn. Autumn twang was in the air and left-over March wind rustled around the sodden diamond but the sweet music of crashing bat upon ball and the welcome shout of the player as he went after a fly rang to the old Androscoggin a few rods away. The proprietor of Sam’s Esso Servicenter at Main and Russell streets in Lewiston escaped injury late Wednesday afternoon when a gasoline fire erupted with explosive force as a motor was being installed in an automobile. Roger Rossignol was working on the car when a spark apparently caused some fuel from an open gas line to explode. Damage to the car, owned by Edward Newsham of Auburn, was not major. The motor suffered some fire damage and the left front tire also was burned.

On April 30, hundreds of people from the Lewiston-Auburn area will gather at the Lewiston Armory to kick-off “Walk America ’89.” WalkAmerica is a benefit for the March of Dimes and its efforts to fight birth defects. Some participants will choose the 20-kilometer route, others will walk the “Golden Mile” and children will join Ronald McDonald and walk the mini-mile (half the distance of a football field). The mini-mile is a new component of WalkAmerica. Children participating will have a chance to walk with Ronald McDonald and will receive an autographed photo of Ronald McDonald.
