WHITING (AP) — Fishermen in an American Indian tribe may now pick up electronic swipe cards that will allow them to fish for elvers in Maine and record sales of the baby eels.
The fishing season for elvers started on April 6, but the Passamaquoddy fishermen are getting the cards just now. The cards are part of a new automated system for recording sales.
The delay in getting the cards came from time the state needed to review Passamaquoddy licenses and prepare the swipe cards after the tribe grudgingly accepted state rules over its own authority in the fishery.
The Passamaquoddy fishermen were able to pick up their cards Thursday at the town hall in Whiting. Cards that are not picked up will go back to Hallowell for pick up.
