AUGUSTA — Dozens of local county and state law enforcement through Maine are participating in a national drug-tack back initiative this weekend.

Collection points will be open across the state on Saturday between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. as part of the national effort to give households a place to safely dispose of unwanted prescription drugs.

Police and volunteers will be on hand from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Bedard’s Pharmacy at 359 Minot Ave. to take those drugs off your hands.

Motorists may use the drive-through window to dispose of prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, veterinary drugs, vitamins and homeopathic treatments. Police cannot accept needles and syringes, electronics and items containing mercury.

The initiative coordinated by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration is designed to ensure that drugs don’t contaminate the water supply, which can happen when medications are disposed down the sink or toilet.

It also aims to protect against medications from being stolen, abused or accidentally ingested.
