1935 – 2014

RUMFORD — Gary W. Philbrick Sr., 78, died Monday, April 28, at the Rumford Hospital. He was a resident of Bernadine Street in Rumford.

Born in Mexico on Aug. 1, 1935, he was a son of Merle and Myrtle (Bean) Philbrick. He graduated from Mexico High School Class of 1953, and worked for Oxford Paper Co. and Boise Cascade Paper Mill in Rumford as a runner on No. 10 paper machine.

Gary was a communicant of the Parish of the Holy Savior St. Athanasius and St John Church. He loved spending time with his family and was also an avid Red Sox Fan and cribbage player. He enjoyed traveling to the casinos.

He was married in Rumford on Nov. 27, 1954, to Joan M. Puiia, who died in Lewiston on July 18, 1996.

Survivors include a daughter, Maureen Philbrick and her friend, Kim, of South Portland; four sons, Gary “Butch” Philbrick Jr. and his wife, Marlene, of Hampton, Ga., Michael of Rumford, Barry of New Gloucester, and Brian of Rumford; grandchildren, Brandi Lynn Deeb and her husband, Aaron, of Mount Airy, Md., Jason Michael Philbrick of Arlington, Va., Melissa Starbird and her husband, Crandon, of Jay, Jennifer Philbrick of Jay and Emily Philbrick of Bethel; five great-grandchildren; a brother, Rodney Philbrick and his wife, Stella, of Rumford; four sisters, Peggy DeRoche of Rumford, Esley Thompson of Mexico, Patty Austin and her husband, Alan, of Rumford, and Beverley Boyle and her husband, Lee, of Mexico; and his good friend, Leo Provencher of Rumford.
