If the Maine National Guards should be pressed into service because of the difficulty with Mexico, the medical department is ready to answer the call, according to Dr. W. L. Haskell of Lewiston, who is a lieutenant in the hospital corps, with headquarters at Norway and assigned to the Coast Artillery. Members of the Medical Department are not allowed to carry any kind of war arms, tho if called to Mexico, special provision would likely be made giving permission for the medical staff to be thus equipped. These members are not subject to capture and they cannot be detained, according to rules of modern warfare. They are under Red Cross rules.

Civil Defense personnel swarmed into the Androscoggin County CD Control Center this morning and quickly went to work as “Step Two” in a national test became operational all over the United States. County Director Normand J. Vermette said the test in this locality is based on simulated attacks on Loring Air Force Base at Presque Isle, Dow Air Force Base in Bangor, the Portsmouth Navy Yard, and Plattsburg Air Force Base in upper New York State. “Such an attack would have an effect on this community in fall out and evacuees,” said Vermette. He explained that sealed envelopes, which contain various problems involving fall out and evacuation, are opened as the exercise process and the county personnel are expected to handle the problems as they arise.

Fifth graders of Elm Street School, Mechanic Falls, are among students from 17 schools across the state who are participating in the Maine State Bar Association’s mock trail program for Law Day 1989 on Monday. The students will be staging Humpty Dumpty vs. Sherman King at the Androscoggin County Superior Court. In the script, Humpty Dumpty, played by Shawna Cotton, contends that Sherman King, played by Ryan Davis, owner of Kings Kar World, is responsible for injuries Humpty sustained when she fell off King’s wall. King claims that every safety precaution was followed in building the wall, and that Humpty’s fall was the result of her own carelessness. The plot thickens with the possibility that Humpty may have been accidentally pushed from the wall.
