PERU — The Board of Selectmen agreed Monday night to wait until after the June town elections to decide on a bid received for revaluation.
The town advertised for bids in several papers and received one from its current assessing company, Parker Appraisal.
Board Chairman Jim Pulsifer said they had three options: accept the bid; reject it; or wait until after the June elections for a full board.
They decided the latter.
“‘Why can’t you just go out to bid again and put it out on the Web?” asked Dawna Kazregis of Peruvians for Honest Government
Selectman Danny Wing said the ad for bids ran in at least three newspapers.
Peruvians for Honest Government member Larry Porter said he had seen a lot of inequities in assessment over the past 14 years with Parker.
Wing asked why people didn’t come in to complain.
Kazregis said it’s because people have been insulted in the past.
Porter said they get several calls a week from residents with questions.
Wing asked why they didn’t call the board.
“Because you insult us,” Porter said.
“That’s your opinion,” Wing replied.
Warren Oldham said, “You people are assessors. Why don’t you do it?”
In other news, Road Commissioner Joe Roach said the crew is on summer hours of 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Thursday.
Roach said all roads are still posted.
Pulsifer questioned if Roach had contacted the state on a culvert on Greenwoods Road that needs attention. Roach said he plans to call them.
Wing asked about cleaning up the Town Office parking lot. Roach said he was working on sweeping the lot and getting the parking places marked.
Wing agreed to look into what was involved in being health officer before he committed to taking the job.
Pulsifer informed the board a shoreland zoning case is coming before a judge May 5.
In November 2013, Code Enforcement Office Jack Plumley told the board he disapproved of building a garage with living quarters above it on land owned by Don and Bill Paradis. Plumley said the construction did not comply with their building permit. The landowners appealed the ruling to tear down the living quarters.
The people are still concerned that a significant amount of money is unaccounted for in the Recreation fund. Porter said, “The full amount was never accounted for.” He asked what the lawyer had advised the Board in Executive session. Pulsifer said they were told it would cost thousands to pursue the issue.
