PORTLAND — Renowned cellist Zuill Bailey will perform with the Portland Symphony Orchestra at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 20, at Merrill Auditorium. Robert Moody will conduct this Tuesday Classical Concert, featuring Gandolfi’s Night Train to Perugia, Rimsky-Korsakov’s Capriccio espagnol and Richard Strauss’ Don Quixote, featuring Zuill Bailey.

The concert will open with Michael Gandolfi’s Night Train to Perugia, a piece that PSO Music Director Robert Moody knew he wanted to bring to Portland after seeing the premier with the Boston Symphony Orchestra at Tanglewood Music Festival in 2012. The piece features locomotive whistles and train-track rhythms, but also represents a metaphysical journey through the mind. In an instance of serendipity, a freight train passed nearby during Gandolfi’s composition, allowing him to transcribe the pitch of the whistles before sharing the notes with the French horns that were to imitate the sound.

With Capriccio espagnol, Rimsky-Korsakov focuses on orchestration and the orchestra itself with a piece that highlights individual instruments. Composed of five sections played without pause, the piece begins with a lively tune featuring the full orchestra along with the clarinet and concertmaster’s violin, and then highlights various instruments before bringing it all together again.

The evening concludes with Richard Strauss’ Don Quixote, featuring guest artist Zuill Bailey representing Don Quixote with the cello, while his squire Sancho Panza is depicted by the viola. The orchestra leads the audience through the ups and downs of Don Quixote’s enchanting world as he battles windmills, takes to the seas on an enchanted boat, and searches for his love, Dulcinea.

Bailey is recognized internationally as one of the most inspired cellists of his time. His “Bach Cello Suites” quickly made its way to number one on the Classical Billboard Charts and he has appeared on a number of live recordings and television programs, including a recurring role on the HBO series “Oz.” Bailey performs with the symphony orchestras of Los Angeles, Chicago, San Francisco, and many more.

The concert is preceded by a Concert Conversation in the Rehearsal Hall at Merrill Auditorium, beginning an hour and 15 minutes prior to the concert’s starting time, and followed by a PostConcert Q&A with the artists on stage.
