LEWISTON — A young man from Lewiston who is a member of this country’s oldest and best-known collegiate a cappella group, will sing with the Whiffenpoofs of Yale University at 8 p.m. in the Gomes Chapel at Bates College on Saturday.
It’s a very special appearance for Nimal Eames-Scott, a 2010 graduate of Lewiston High School. Just back from a spring tour in South America, the 14-member all-male group of Yale seniors leaves soon on a worldwide tour from May to August. The singers take the year off from school and devote the time to singing and traveling with the group.
“We do about 200 concerts in the year,” Eames-Scott said. “Some of the most special concerts we do are the hometown ones, when we have a chance to share with friends and family.”
The Whiffenpoofs fund all of their own travel expenses through concert revenue. It’s a tradition for the concerts to include the hometowns of all of the singers. This stop in Lewiston wraps up the United States schedule before the young men head for Ireland and on to 30 countries in Europe, Africa, Asia and Australia.
Following Saturday night’s concert, the Whiffenpoofs will conduct a workshop with Bates College’s vocal groups including the Deansmen and the Merrymanders, the male and female a cappella ensembles at Bates, to exchange ideas on performance and songs.
On Monday, May 5, the Whiffenpoofs will present a free concert at Lewiston High School, where Eames-Scott sang with the concert choir and the smaller jazz choir.
The Whiffenpoofs have been featured on numerous television programs including “Saturday Night Live,” and most recently on the fourth-season finale of the TV hit “Glee.”
They have performed at Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center and the White House. The Whiffenpoofs’ repertoire ranges from original compositions to hits from every decade since their beginning.
Ticket are $20 for the general public and $10 for students. They may be purchased at www.whiffenpoofs.com/tickets. For more information, call 570-294-7957.
