AUBURN — Catholic school students finished first, second and third in the 2014 Modern Woodmen of America County/District Speech Contest held at Saint Dominic Academy’s Auburn campus on April 29.
The first-place winner, Maddy Leslie, an eighth-grade student at Saint Dominic Academy, won a $50 cash award, a personal trophy and an engraved trophy for the school. Second-place winner Maggie Kase, also an eighth grader at Saint Dominic Academy, and third-place winner Libby Palanza, a seventh-grade student at Holy Cross Catholic School in South Portland, also received trophies.
Ten students from area schools competed in the contest after qualifying through local competitions. The students delivered 3-5 minute speeches on the topic “Maintaining a Healthy Lifestyle.”
Maddy, Maggie and Libby now advance to the 2014 Modern Woodmen of America State/Regional Competition on Wednesday, May 7, at 6 p.m. The State/Regional competition will also be hosted by Saint Dominic Academy.
