RUMFORD — A Skowhegan man was arrested late Thursday afternoon on warrants in Rumford after police responded to a 911 call about a man seen hitting a white pickup truck parked beside Route 2.
Troy Hampton, 20, was charged with unpaid fines on convictions of operating under the influence and operating without a license, as well as for violation of bail on charges of burglary and theft, Rumford police Cpl. Lawrence Winson said Thursday evening.
Hampton was then taken to Oxford County Jail in Paris.
Winson said Rumford police were notified at 4:13 p.m. by a Paris dispatcher of a suspicious call about a male punching windows on a white truck parked beside Route 2.
Rumford police responded, along with Oxford County Sheriff Wayne Gallant, Oxford County Deputy Cpl. George Cayer and Maine State Police Trooper Ron Turnic, who all happened to be in the area at the time.
Drivers traveling past the scene slowed down upon seeing all the police vehicles with flashing lights parked along the side of the westbound lane in front of and behind the truck.
Winson said that after investigating, they learned the occupants of the truck were having an argument on the side of the road. A routine check of all involved turned up arrest warrants on Hampton.
Police also learned that an underage Skowhegan youth in the truck had been drinking alcohol. The youth was held by police until being released into custody of a parent.
