Maine Iris Society spring auction
AUBURN — The Maine Iris Society will hold its annual spring auction at 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 13, at the United Methodist Church, 439 Park Ave. This is a perfect opportunity for new gardeners to get plants that are suitable to our climate and a chance for experienced gardeners to buy unusual plants.
Sometimes vegetable and herb seedlings are for sale. Divisions will be available of many kinds of flowers besides iris. A variety of perennials and sometimes shrubs such as lilacs are sold to the highest bidder. Plants that have overwintered and thrived in Maine gardens are donated to the auction by the members who grow them.
New Auburn Seniors plan bingo
AUBURN — New Auburn Seniors will hold open bingo for seniors on Wednesday, May 14, at Sacred Heart Church.
There is no big payout, but plenty of fun. The minimum is six cards for $2.
Doors open at 9 a.m., canteen opens at 10:30 and bingo begins at 12:30.
There are no more round tables, and abbreviated bingo is done until September.
The group is still handing out free Dunkin Donuts mugs, which allow seniors to buy coffee for 62 cents.
Display of 125 years of hospital history
LEWISTON — The Central Maine Medical Center Woman’s Hospital Association and the CMMC College of Nursing Alumni Association will present “A Brief History: 125 Years of Service” on Wednesday, May 14.
Photographs, posters, clothing and memorabilia celebrating the contributions made by the Central Maine Medical Center Woman’s Hospital Association and the Central Maine Medical Center School of Nursing (now CMMC College of Nursing and Health Professions) to the health and welfare of the greater Lewiston-Auburn region and beyond.
The presentation will be on display in the CMMC Main Lobby, 60 High St., from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
St. Mary’s program on heart health
LEWISTON — The right decisions can save a life in an emergency. Learn more about chest pain symptoms, what happens after you dial 9-1-1, heart attack vs. chest pain, ER chest pain treatment and cardiac rehab information.
Plus, tour the emergency department, learn the basics of CPR and exercises for heart health, watch demonstrations of a personal emergency response device and an automatic external defibrillator.
The presenters will be Chris Bowe, M.D., medical director of St. Mary’s Emergency Department, an accredited Chest Pain Center, and Daphne Russell, prevention and wellness coordinator with United Ambulance.
The event will be held at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 14, in the Lepage Conference Center , 99 Campus Ave.

American Legion Post 22 meeting
LEWISTON — American Legion Post 22 will hold its monthly membership meeting at 6 p.m. Thursday, May 15, at the Senior Citizens Room, Memorial Armory, 65 Central Ave.
Auxiliary Unit 22 will meet at 5:15 p.m.
There will be a 50/50 raffle and prizes will be given out.

United Church holding bake sale
MONMOUTH — A bake sale will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, May 17, at the May Faire at Cumston Hall.
Available will be quiches, cakes, pies, chocolate brownies, chocolate chip cookies, biscuits, lemon squares, cinnamon rolls, fudge, muffins and goolash-to-go (with a spoon).

Sale planned at Cumston May Faire
MONMOUTH — “Cream-Of-the-Crop” featuring selected items from a closet, cedar chest, china closet, attic or other special place will be available at the May Faire at Cumston Hall from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, May 17.
This event is hosted by Monmouth Museum for maintenance and preservation of the buildings and collection.
Benefit supper for Bellemare-Duperey
TURNER — A benefit supper will be held for Debbie Bellemare-Duperey from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 17, at the Boofy Quimby Hall.
Duperey, a mother and grandmother of three, was diagnosed with stage four ovarian cancer in 2012, just a week after her husband Michael died of Lou Gehrig’s disease. She underwent treatment for the cancer, but it returned last year and she is now seeking treatment at Massachusetts General in Boston.
The benefit supper will help Bellemare-Duperey meet some of her medical expenses.
Admission is by donation, with musical entertainment by the Turner-based bluegrass band, Grinners and Pickers.

Automotive heating, cooling class
AUBURN — Central Maine Community College, in collaboration with NAPA’s Heating & Cooling Group, is offering a 22-hour, one-credit college training course that introduces the principles of refrigeration and heat transfer. Modern test and recovery equipment will be used to diagnose and service automotive air conditioning systems.
The course is part of the college’s in-house campus core concentration requirement to earn an associate degree in automotive technology. It includes two full days of classroom/automotive lab instruction with one day of on-the-job experience with the ability to consult the CMCC instructor.
Two sessions will be offered: Session 1, May 20-22; Session 2, June 10-12. All classes will be held daily from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at CMCC’s Automotive Technology Lab. Cost is $230 and includes all instruction materials, continental breakfast, lunch and snacks.

LEWISTON — Disabled American Veterans Chapter 11 will hold its monthly meeting at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 20, at Memorial Armory, 65 Central Ave.
The meetings are held on the third Tuesday of each month, except June, July and August.

Mammogram party is May 20
LEWISTON — In celebration of Mother’s Day, St. Mary’s Women’s Imaging and Breast Health Departments are hosting a Mother-Daughter Mammography party at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 20. There will be light refreshments and raffle.
Because the hospital feels this screening is so important, it’s not limited to moms and their daughters. Any woman over 40 who hasn’t had a mammogram in the past 12 months is invited. To reserve a spot, call 777-4059.
Mammography screening is the best way to detect breast cancer in its earlier stages and saves lives, yet 4 out of 10 women don’t get this vital screening.
According to the American Cancer Society, mammograms reduce breast cancer mortality by 25-30 percent for women ages 50-70 and 18 percent for women ages 40-50. Additionally, early detection gives women new options for breast-conserving therapy.
Chef of The Year Gala & Awards
LEWISTON — The American Culinary Federation’s Central Maine Chapter will present the second annual Chef of The Year Gala & Awards Dinner on Tuesday, May 20, at The Ramada Inn Conference Center. Reception starts at 6 p.m., chef stations and awards at 6:30, entertainment around 7:15.
The night will feature award-winning dishes from more than 30 local chefs and restaurants, including Fishbones, DaVinci’s, Hilton, Pinky D’s, The Green Ladle, Jasmine Cafe, Schemengees, Rolly’s Diner, Hurricanes, Mac’s Grill and more.
Attendees will sample and vote on their favorite dishes.
Following dinner, there will be an awards ceremony and comedy hour by Gary Crocker.
