LEWISTON — Ant enthusiasts of all ages are invited to the Ant Picnic beginning at noon Saturday, May 17, at USM’s Lewiston-Auburn College, 51 Westminster St.
The event is in conjunction with the exhibition in the Atrium Art Gallery, “Ant Farm: At the Nexus of Art and Science.” It is free and open to the public; guests should bring a picnic lunch.
Starting at noon, guests are free to eat outside or inside, collect ants with enthusiastic members of the Maine Entomological Society and view the exhibit.
From 12:45 to 1 p.m., the Ant Girls (artists Colleen Kinsella, Rebecca Goodale and Vivien Russe) will give a brief presentation about the exhibit. From 1 to 1:30, ant expert Aaron Ellison with give a talk on the fascinating science side of ants and ant identification in Room 170. From 1:30 to 2, there will be more ant collecting, viewing the exhibit and talking with presenters.
In the event of inclement weather, guests are invited to bring their picnic lunches inside and eat amongst the installed elements of the exhibit: Ant Scrolls, Fungus Farm and Nuptial Swarm.
