Boxberry auction, spring social

HARRISON — The Boxberry School’s sixth annual silent auction and spring social will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday, May 17, at Fernwood Cove.

There will be live music with Milltown Roadshow, and Sopo Co. wines and gourmet appetizers by Chef Erik Person and desserts by Anna Sysko.

Live auction items include HCM Concrete Artisans Chessboard table & patio set, Pleasant Hill Property Services hand-built fire pit, and hand-painted Adirondack chairs.

Silent auction items include Portland Harbor Hotel, Fore Street Restaurant, Rough & Tumble purse, Don Best Sculpture, 76 Pleasant St. Restaurant, Local artists’ handcrafted items and jewelry, spa, restaurant and local business gift certificates and lots more.

Weary Club coffee is May 17

CPR, first aid class on May 17

OXFORD — A CPR and first aid class will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 17, at the Oxford Public Safety Building.

Instruction includes basic first aid, CPR for adults, children and infants and use of an automated external defibrillator.

On completion of the one-day class, a two-year certification in accordance with the American Heart Association will be given. This certification is accepted for day/child care providers, loggers, guides, teachers and any other non-healthcare related professions.

Call to confirm the date. Groups may request to schedule a class at their convenience. Healthcare BLS CPR recertifications are done as needed one-on-one.

Fire Auxiliary plans public supper

PARIS — The Paris Fire Department Auxiliary will hold a public supper  at 5 p.m. Saturday, May 17, at Paris Fire Dept., Western Avenue.

The supper will feature meatloaf, mashed potatoes, mac and cheese, veggies, salad and desserts. Adults, $8; ages 4-12, $4; under age 3, free.

All proceeds benefit the Paris Fire Department Auxiliary and Fire Personnel.

First Universalist rummage sale

PARIS — A rummage sale will take place Saturday, May 17, at the First Universalist Church, 36 Pine St.

Items will include clothing, books, fabric, linens, dishes, shoes and white elephant.

A bag sale will be from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. for $1 per bag.

Hartford Church clothing center

HARTFORD — The Hartford Community Church Clothing Center will be open from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday, May 17. The center is located directly across from the church.

Indoor yard sale at Wilkins House

WATERFORD — An indoor yard sale will be held from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday, May 17, at the Wilkins House.

New items have been added and the sale offers something for all ages.

The Wilkins House is on Plummer Hill Road next to the church in the center of Waterford. All proceeds benefit the church and the Wilkins House.

Finnish, American buffet supper

WEST PARIS — A public buffet supper featuring Finnish, American and other ethnic foods will be held at 5 p.m. Saturday, May 17, at the Finnish-American Heritage Center, 8 Maple St.

Cost is $8 for adults and $4 for children under 12.

The supper is hosted by the Finnish American Heritage Society.

Italian dinner at Hebron Baptist

Finnish American Heritage Society

WEST PARIS — The Finnish American Heritage Society will meet at 2 p.m. Sunday, May 18, at the Finnish-American Heritage Center, 8 Maple St.

Following a brief business meeting and coffee social, Barbara Payne will present a program on the Italian Hall Tragedy which took place in 1913.

This little known, but important, part of Finnish immigrant history was popularized in a song by Woody Guthrie in 1940.

Author Bennett to speak at library

WEST PARIS — The West Paris Library will host Maine author Dean Bennett at 2 p.m. Sunday, May 18.

Dr. Bennett will present an illustrated program on the fascinating story of the remote, forested valley of Wild River, and its ghost town, Hastings village, located on the Maine-New Hampshire border. Here, in one magnificent place, history, economy, conservation and recreation come together to describe the values of the Maine Woods.

Born and raised in Locke’s Mills, Bennett is professor emeritus at the University of Maine at Farmington, receiving his Ph.D. from the University of Michigan in resource planning and conservation. The title of his presentation is from the title of his ninth published book on nature and wilderness, all of which relate to the Maine Woods.

The presentation is being sponsored by the “Celebrate the Maine Woods” partnership in West Paris, including the Arthur L. Mann Memorial Library, the Agnes Gray School, the West Paris Historical Society and the Maurice G. Benson Forest.

WEST PARIS — The West Paris Historical Society will have its first meeting of 2014 on Monday, May 19.

A potluck dinner will be held at 6 p.m. followed by a short business meeting at 7.

Local historian Ben Conant will present an evening about Jack Quinn, a local reporter covering Oxford Hills area news for many years.

Libraries offer discount park pass

NORWAY/WEST PARIS — Norway and West Paris Libraries are offering a discount pass for the Maine Wildlife Park in Gray.

According to the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries & Wildlife brochure, “Visiting the park is a fascinating experience for nature lovers of all ages, and a great way to introduce children to the wonders of Maine’s wildlife.”

Patrons of the Norway Memorial Library and the Arthur L. Mann Library in West Paris may borrow a day pass for reduced admission at the park. While this is an ongoing and popular service of the Norway Library, courtesy of their Friends of the Library organization, it is the first season for the West Paris Library, made possible by their Friends Group, who wish to support their community’s interest in Celebrating the Maine Woods in 2014.

The discounted admission is $2.50 for adults and children. Regular admission is $7 (ages 13-60), or $5 (seniors and ages 4-12). The pass is for individuals and families, rather than large groups.
