DIXFIELD — The Police Department is giving trigger locks to residents to improve gun safety, police Chief Richard Pickett said Thursday evening.

Pickett said the locks came from Maine Citizens Against Handgun Violence.

“They’re a Maine-based organization that spoke at the latest Maine Chiefs of Police Association meeting and said that they would give trigger locks to any interested police departments to give to their residents,” he said. “We told them that we would take some.”

The trigger locks are easy to use, Pickett said. They fit around the trigger of any firearm so children wouldn’t be able to fire the gun.

“We’re all really excited about this program. Anything we can do to make the town safer is a benefit,” he said. “We live in an area where a lot of people hunt and own firearms, so this is a good way to make people keep their firearms safe around children.”

Pickett said his department has given out some trigger locks.

“We’re expecting to receive more in the days to come,” he said. “If anyone is interested in getting a trigger lock, we’re asking them to call us and request one.”
