At the May 7 Auburn City Council meeting, Dan Herrick spoke during the public hearing and commented on the deliberation concerning Auburn’s EMTs transporting patients, rather than just taking the role as first responders. Herrick took issue with many people, including members of the Auburn Fire Department, saying that the fire department arrives on the scene first.

Herrick cited an instance where he needed emergency assistance and United Ambulance got there first. He went on to say that there is a joke going around town that the reason United responded first is “because the fire truck was at Hannaford Bros. or at the Dairy Joy.”

I hope I am not the only citizen of Auburn who is outraged at Herrick’s remarks, which show a total lack of respect for the men and women of the fire department who keep residents safe.

Speaking as a citizen of Auburn, I am grateful that Herrick was not elected to the Auburn School Committee.
