DEAR SUN SPOTS: The Woman’s Literary Union of Androscoggin County held a successful prom gown giveaway event recently. We received more than 225 prom gowns — it was almost as if the community was waiting for such an event.

We have invited those girls who received a free prom gown (55 of them) and anyone else in the community to “pay it forward” by returning or donating a new or cleaned, gently used prom gown and/or wedding gown at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 28, at the Foss Mansion, 19 Elm St., Auburn.

The prom gowns will be given away for free next year before prom, and the wedding gowns are for a WLU charitable benefit event to be held later this year. Following the drop-off of gowns on June 28, WLU members will be on hand to give tours of the mansion at 2:30 p.m. followed by a tea buffet.

If you’ve been holding on to a prom or wedding gown, this is the perfect way to recycle it and clean out your closet or cedar chest. WLU appreciates being a community resource that helps others in many ways.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: Do you know what happened to Josh, who was on “Good Morning America?” Was he let go, or did he leave on his own? We miss him. — No Name, Lewiston

ANSWER: According to a story on people.com, Josh Elliott’s departure from “Good Morning America” for NBC Sports was his choice. Josh said it was not about the money (speculation is that he makes about $4 million a year) but about his desire to cover the Olympics, the NFL and racing’s Triple Crown, which includes the Kentucky Derby, the Preakness (where Sun Spots used to work as a pari-mutuel teller) and the Belmont Stakes.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: I read Sun Spots with interest each day. There have been several recent questions and comments concerning displaying the U.S. flag.

As a veteran I have the greatest respect for the flag and what it stands for. As the person who raises and lowers the flags at my place of work, I want to know all I should know about the subject.

It is not hard to obtain an official copy of the U.S. Flag Code, approved by Congress. My copy was distributed by the American Legion.

A greatly helpful website, which answers many questions about the flag is www.ushistory.org/betsy/faq.htm. Q & A’s can be viewed online or downloaded free. — Andy Powell, [email protected]
