(Editorial) We share the confident optimism of Mayor Roland L. Marcotte of Lewiston that the reactionary elements on the City Council will not prevent the future union of Auburn and Lewiston, even though obstructionism can make the way more difficult. There are many areas of cooperation to be explored and exploited. The anti-merger vote of the Lewiston aldermen puts a damper on such activity. Fortunately, the Mayor has both the courage and the energy, as well as the vision so lacking on the Council, to pursue his objective, even though he fully expects that he will not see its realization in his day. The rising burden of taxation on the municipal level in both cities makes it imperative that there be some new thinking. The idea has too much merit to be stopped by a drag anchor, such as the Council’s anti-merger vote.

Lisbon voters finally wrapped up the six-night, nearly 19-hour marathon town meeting Tuesday. Less than 200 residents were present when it was voted to authorize selectmen to borrow up to $250,000 which will be used to pay preliminary costs to construct a new municipal office complex. Selectmen said the new building will be located on the tax-acquired former “Hillcrest site” on Mill Street in Lisbon.
