FERNANDIA BEACH, Fla. — Shirley Jean Kailey, or Jean Kailey as she was more familiarly known, died Wednesday, May 21.

She was born in Norwood, Mass., the second daughter of Arthur and Hilda (Smith) Platt.

Jean married Paul Kailey of Berlin, N.H., in 1945, and together, they worked to put Paul through Middlebury College in Middlebury, Vt. Upon graduation, they went to Gould Academy in Bethel, where Paul taught history and economics, and coached skiing and football for 16 years. Paul was instrumental in the opening of Sunday River Ski Area and together, they operated the ski shop, know as Sunri. They also owned and operated a second shop on Main Street in Bethel.

In 1966, they became manufacturers’ representatives for several ski companies in northern New England. Retiring in 1987, Paul and Jean moved to Amelia Island, Fla., where they enjoyed many wonderful years.

Jean enjoyed tennis, golf and skiing, and was an avid mah-jongg player. She lost her husband of 57 years to cancer in 2003, and three years later sold their home on Amelia Island Plantation and moved into a condo at Harrison Cove. She was currently residing at Osprey Village on Amelia Island, Fla.

She is survived by her three children, Peter and his wife, Nancy, of Franconia, N.H., Cindy and her husband, Mark Hiebert, of Bethel, and Chris and his wife, Denise, of Helena, Ala.; seven grandchildren, Sara and her husband, David Hawkes, Erin and her husband, Rick Husk, Luke Hiebert and his wife, Tracy, Matt Hiebert and his wife, Sarah, Kiirsten and her husband, Rich Adams, and Shannon and Ryan Kailey; six great-grandchildren, Patrick and Andrew Husk, David, Carter and Kailey Hawkes and Kira Hiebert; a very special niece, Sandy and her husband, David Rounds, of St. Augustine, Fla., and family; and four nephews.

In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by her parents and her sister, Marjorie Rawson Vignoni.
