LIVERMORE — Police said a 6-year-old girl was seriously injured Monday afternoon after she jumped out of a rolling Jeep Wrangler and it ran over her.

The child was taken to Maine Medical Center in Portland with internal injuries, including to her spleen, Lt. Brian McDonough of the Maine State Police Major Crimes Unit said Thursday.

“The prognosis initially was scary, but now the prognosis looks good,” he said.

The girl and another 6-year-old child were pretending to drive the vehicle when it somehow shifted into neutral gear and started to roll, McDonough said. The children got scared and when they tried to jump out, one of the girls ended up trapped under the Jeep and it rolled over her, he said.

The two children were being babysat at the time, McDonough said.

The incident remains under investigation, but at this time it is being treated as accidental, he said.

State police and Androscoggin County Sheriff’s deputies responded to the scene.

Police will report their findings to the Androscoggin County District Attorney’s Office.
