LEWISTON — June classes offered at SeniorsPlus have been announced.
Classes, free unless noted, are held at 8 Falcon Road. The building is handicapped accessible, and hearing assistive equipment is available.
“Hearing and Balance: How Are They Connected?”: Thursday, June 5, from 1 to 2:30 p.m.; instructor, Ashlee Harrington Vandiver, Au.D., CCC-A, FAAA. The class will cover some common causes of balance dysfunction and typical symptoms of ear-related balance disorders. The class will practice basic balance-related tasks and discuss methods to make the home and living spaces fall-safe.
“Communicating for a Healthier Tomorrow”: Friday, June 6, from 9 a.m. to noon; instructor, Marilyn Newell, PhD. Sometimes communication breaks down, becomes ineffective or stops. The workshop will take a lighthearted look at the problem of communication breakdowns and provide alternative ways to open up communication channels that have been blocked.
“Maine Author Series, ‘Ed Muskie: Made in Maine,’ James Witherell”: Monday, June 9, from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Commemorating the 100th anniversary of Muskie’s birth, this recently published book discusses how Maine’s Ed Muskie, son of an immigrant tailor, developed into a two-term governor of Maine, as well as an effective American leader.
“Medicare Basics”: Wednesday, June 18, from 6 to 7:30 p.m.; instructor, Roland Bussiere. Learn the basics and timelines of the complex system. Learn when you need to sign up for what, and ways to save money.

The session will help prepare discussion of inheritance issues, as well as offer a step-by-step guide on what to do with nontitled property.
“Making Jewelry”: Friday, June 20, from 1 to 3 p.m.; instructor, Sandi Godin; cost, $10 for supplies. Make a bracelet and earrings in class.
“Health Matters: Skin Cancer Awareness and Prevention”: Tuesday, June 24, from 10 to 11:30 a.m.; instructor, Maureen M. Higgins, LCSW, Cancer Health Outreach educator, Patrick Dempsey Center for Cancer Hope & Healing. Skin cancer is the most common cancer in the United States. Learn how to protect the skin and check moles using the ABCDE guidelines.
“AARP Smart Driver”: Wednesday, June 25, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.; cost, $20, payable to AARP; $15 for AARP members. Drivers 55 + who complete the class are eligible for discounts on their auto insurance for three years.
“Continuing to Garden As We Age”: Friday, June 27, from 1 to 2:30 p.m.; instructor, Ellen S. Gibson, Maine AgrAbility Program; Ketra S. Crosson, AlphaOne. Topic will be causes of aging joint stress and pain, working mindfully and making small changes in routines that can help gain strength and reduce pain.
