WATERVILLE — The death of a 92-year-old man found in his home Friday by a relative is under investigation as suspicious, police said.

Aurele Fecteau was found by a relative and his wife and may have been dead a day or two, according to Lt. Christopher Coleman, commander of the Maine State Police Major Crimes Unit North, which is investigating the death.

Coleman said the relative, whom he wouldn’t identify, hadn’t heard from Fecteau in several days and went to check on the man at his home on 33 Brooklyn Ave. The home is in a largely residential neighborhood between Waterville’s high school and its football field. A Major Crimes Unit Evidence Response Team truck was parked in the home’s driveway Friday afternoon, and police vehicles were parked on both sides of the street.

A woman who identified herself as Fecteau’s neighbor, but wouldn’t give her name, said the dead man was a good neighbor and gardener.

Coleman said an autopsy is scheduled for Saturday morning. He said state police were initially contacted about the death by the Waterville Police Department Friday around noon or a short time later. He asked that anyone who may have seen anything suspicious near the home at the corner of Brooklyn and Vose streets in the last several days to contact police.
