SKOWHEGAN — A convenience store on Madison Avenue was robbed at knifepoint Monday morning and police are searching for the suspect.
The robber, a white man, entered the Irving Mainway shortly after 2 a.m., displayed his weapon and demanded cash, according to Skowhegan Police Chief Ted Blais.
In addition to taking an undisclosed amount of cash and other items from the store, the robber demanded the clerk’s car keys and got away in her Ford Escort, according to Blais.
A short time after the robbery was reported, the vehicle was found in the area of Smith Street in Skowhegan by a Madison police officer, Blais said.
“The car was abandoned, so a canine unit was requested for a track,” Blais said.
Deputy Dave Cole of the Somerset County Sheriff’s Office arrived with his canine partner and the duo tracked from the car to a house on Beech Street, Blais said.
A search warrant was executed at the property and evidence of the robbery was found, Blais said, but the suspect was not located.
The robber stands 6 feet tall, has an average build and was wearing a bandana around his face and gloves, Blais said.
