PARIS — Responsible Pet Care of Oxford Hills is holding fundraisers to support the nonprofit shelter, President Shirley Boyce said Tuesday.

The first of two yearly toll roads is set for Saturday, May 31, on Fair Street in Norway.

“We try to hold two toll roads a year that coincide with Be Kind to Animals Week, which is held May 5 to 11, and National Adopt a Dog Day, which is held in October,” Boyce said. “This year, we got rained out during the week that Be Kind to Animals Week was held, so we rescheduled it to May 31.”

A kitten shower is scheduled from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, June 14 and 15, Boyce said.

“This is something we do every year,” she said. “It gives people a chance to visit the shelter and see what we’re doing. It also gives people a chance to donate to the shelter, if they wish.”

Boyce said Responsible Pet Care is looking for Purina Kitten Chow, canned pate food, cat toys, half-yard pieces of fleece and bedding, paper towels and bleach, among other items.

“It’s not necessary for those visiting to donate, but we encourage it,” Boyce said.

The second annual Fun Dog Day is scheduled Sunday, June 22.

“Last year went great,” Boyce said. “It was organized by a group of volunteers who wanted to hold an event for people who love dogs. They started planning for the event a couple months before it happened last year, but this year, they’ve been working on it since before Christmas.”

The free event will begin at 10:30 a.m. with a dog walk, followed by contests, including best dressed dog, best vocals and best kisser.

Boyce said the shelter is always looking for ways to keep people interested in the operation and to raise money to keep it open.

“Sometimes, we’ll keep our ears open to see what other shelters in the area are doing,” she said. “That’s how a lot of different places get their ideas. We see what each place is doing and see how we can do something for ourselves.”
