LEWISTON — The city’s downtown feted the coming of summer in a dance of colorful umbrellas blooming under a light rain Friday night. Like the welcome return of green leaves, Lisbon Street stretched its sidewalks and storefronts wide to unfurl this season’s first Art Walk Lewiston Auburn.

Amid the ambling, slicker-clad crowds were the curious and the collectors; those who appreciate creativity in all its forms and those who admire art with more discerning eyes and ears.

Joanne Sabourine of Auburn has been attending the Art Walk since its beginning, she said.

“Lisbon Street has really blossomed,” she said. “I love the sociability of this event and the opportunity to be closer to such talented people. The walk puts the culture back into our lives.”

Androscoggin Bank President and CEO Paul Anderson agreed.

“Art and the arts, theater and music make for a great community and they are so important in terms of the economic impact on a community,” she said. “We’ve been in the downtown for 145 years, and we really want to support this effort.”

Despite the damp weather, the mood was easy as people weaved in and out of the tapestry of shops and offices hosting local and Maine artists and their work. Some of the 22 venues welcomed guests with tasty tidbits and drinks. There was also wine tasting and chocolate tasting by Maine Gourmet Chocolates at The Vault. Some storefront windows served as living studios where artwork was created by artists. Small children danced down the sidewalk, stopping to talk to artists through the glass.

“Everyone enjoys a nice evening and being a part of the crowd,” said artist Christopher Eaton. “The walk is a tremendous way to see different medias and venues and you don’t have to like everything you see (to appreciate the experience).”

In The Cupcakery, Sue Mercier and her granddaughter, Chloe Mercier, settled in for a decadent treat following their tour. It was the first time they had participated in the Art Walk. Chloe began taking art lessons in the winter, and her grandmother said she thought this outing would give her something to aspire.

Chloe’s favorite pieces were on display at Androscoggin Savings Bank. “I liked the faded paint technique, especially the picture of the house and the field of flowers,” she said.

The Art Walk Lewiston Auburn returns the last Friday night of each month from June through September.
