DEAR SUN SPOTS: Literacy Volunteers-Androscoggin will be offering a 12 hour tutor training workshop from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. June 7 and 14.

We have many adults who are waiting for a one-on-one literacy tutor to help them meet their educational goals. In particular, we need someone who speaks a little Spanish, and individuals who can help with GED prep.

Education is the gift that lasts a lifetime. Please consider joining us.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: I am a convicted felon who made some mistakes early in my life. I have changed my life for the good and am looking for the chance to work.

Many businesses in the area won’t hire felons. Are there any programs or jobs in the area that will give felons employment and a second chance? — Second Redemption, Lewiston

ANSWER: Sun Spots only knows of one group that helps released prisoners:

Cell to Street community re-entry program, Calvin E. Dube, community inmate advocate, P.O. Box 631, Lewiston, ME 04243, 402-4430.

Considering the dearth of good jobs, you might consider starting your own business. Sun Spots gets lots of requests from older residents looking for someone to snowblow their driveways, haul heavy items, etc.

Perhaps readers will have other ideas or suggestions.

GREETINGS SUN SPOTS: In response to the request for experiences from readers who have had a Lifestyle Lift (May 24), I had one in May of last year.

I had a very full neck with lots of sags, I was 70 when I had my lift. This is not inexpensive, but they have great marketing and salespeople.

I do look better today than when I had it done. But the Lifestyle Lift doctor pulled my chin a little too tight so I now have a nice, well-defined chin, but I have sags on either side (little jowl type sags).

When I pointed it out to the doctor, he said he would fix it at no cost but would only say that it would not look worse than it does now. I decided not to risk it.

Do not underestimate the trauma of the surgery. My friend stayed with me overnight in Burlington, Mass., and was concerned. Do not attempt this alone!

There was considerable discomfort (you sleep in a recliner and have to elevate your head, which makes sense). And there is pain.

You also have a drain with a receptacle for any drainage. They asked if we had to drain it when we went in the next morning for the follow-up visit, and we were clueless because no one at Lifestyle told us that we might need to drain this device.

The staff is very nice, and my physician was charming. My suggestion is to check out the options before you sign on with Lifestyle Lifts. I’m going to check locally to see if I can get my little sags fixed. Good luck! — No Name via email
