Asphalt oil will be used on the roads in Lewiston this summer if the test is satisfactory, according to the vote of the public works commission. The Standard Oil company will ship a car containing 10,000 gallons here and the oil will be spread by employees of the company. This material containing from 45-65 per cent of asphalt is supposed to be excellent for dealing with the dust problem in addition to making the road firmer.

The familiar sounds of the glockenspiel, bass drums, brass trombones, clarinets, flutes and horns will ring out again at Kennedy Park beginning Sunday as the annual Summer Sunday Night Concert program gets underway in Lewiston. The Textile City’s Le Montagnard Band will provide the entertainment program weekly for ten weeks, weather permitting, on the familiar red, white and blue bandstand at the park. Band Director Robert P. Rabassa, Lewiston High School band leader as well, will wave the baton at 7:30 p.m. and from then on it will be 90 minutes of marches, overtures, show tunes and classical selections to suit everybody’s taste.

The Lewiston Journal, which in its heyday gained a reputation as a trend-setter in production techniques and writing style, will merge Monday with its younger sister paper, The Lewiston Daily Sun. Today’s issue marks the official end of the Journal, but its name, and its most popular features, will be incorporated into the new morning daily newspaper, to be called the Sun-Journal. While declining circulation influenced the decision, the merger actually stemmed from a desire to make better use of the papers’ staff and resources, said James R. Costello Sr., publisher and general manager. “Declining circulation was just the symptom of the demise of the afternoon paper,” explained Costello, whose family has been in the newspaper business since before the turn of the century.
