The Lewiston Journal, which in its heyday gained a reputation as a trend-setter in production techniques and writing style, will merge Monday with its younger sister paper, The Lewiston Daily Sun. Today’s issue marks the official end of the Journal, but its name, and its most popular features, will be incorporated into the new morning daily newspaper, to be called the Sun-Journal. While declining circulation influenced the decision, the merger actually stemmed from a desire to make better use of the papers’ staff and resources, said James R. Costello Sr., publisher and general manager. “Declining circulation was just the symptom of the demise of the afternoon paper,” explained Costello, whose family has been in the newspaper business since before the turn of the century.
