LEWISTON — A single shot was fired into the air, police said, during an argument near the corner of Birch and Bartlett streets in Lewiston on Monday night.

Police who responded to the call arrested 24-year-old Brent Verney on a charge of reckless conduct with a firearm.

One witness told police he dialed 911 after hearing at least one gunshot around 6:30 p.m.

“It could have been three,” the witness said, “but it might have been just one and I just heard the echos off the buildings.”

No one was hurt in the incident. A single shell casing from a semi-automatic handgun was recovered from inside the apartment building at the corner of Bartlett and Birch streets.

The witness said he heard the shot and then saw a white male chasing a black male up Birch Street toward Lisbon Street.

Verney, who lives in downtown Lewiston, was booked at the Androscoggin County Jail in Auburn. The matter remained under investigation later Monday night.
