1920 – 2014

SCARBOROUGH — Roscoe C. Hinkley, 94, of 5 Gerrys Lane, Eliot, and formerly of Lewiston, died Thursday morning, June 5, at the Maine Veterans’ Home in Scarborough, following a long illness.

He was born in Wales on April 14, 1920, a son of the late Carl and Hazel (Greenwood) Hinkley, and had been a resident of this community for most of his life.

He was educated in Wales schools and was a graduate of Lewiston High School, Class of 1938. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served in World War II and was awarded the Bronze Star.

Roscoe was employed as a salesman at John A. Finn Monument Co. for many years, until his retirement.

He married the former Adrienne Vallee on May 29, 1944; she died on Dec. 16, 1991.

He was a member of the Elks Club in Lewiston; on the board of directors for almost 50 years at Our Lady of the Rosary Credit Union, which is now Sabattus Regional Credit Union; a member of the American Legion of Sabattus; and secretary and treasurer for Our Lady of the Rosary Men’s Club.

Roscoe was a jack-of-all-trades, having enjoyed woodworking, plumbing, electrical and so on. If anyone had anything to fix, they brought it to him. He also enjoyed taking his grandsons and great-grandsons fishing in the Moosehead Lake region.

He is survived by two daughters, Patricia Levesque of Eliot and Barbara Wyman and her husband, Raymond, of Gorham; one sister, Shirley Brownell, of Wales; six grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Besides his wife, he was predeceased by a son, Charles E. Hinkley; and two brothers, Walter and George Hinkley.
