Contexture, materials linked or woven to form a united whole, is what binds the works of the five artists together into an exciting oneness of artistry and vision. Through dyeing, weaving, painting and assembling objects, the artists entwine their favorite media to create pieces that explore sparked emotions, experiences and expressions, both fleeting and enduring.

Textile and assemblage artists have a diverse selection of materials and techniques to manipulate and mold, while bringing their visions to life. Those who work with unconventional materials, including books, dyes, porcupine quills, and textiles, are able to push the storytelling envelope, as well as the boundaries of their materials to chronicle their vision. The message conveyed is curious and noteworthy, as is the willingness possessed by the artists to think outside the box and play with uncommon materials.

Each artist has carefully crafted techniques that allow deep exploration of materials and concept. Nicholson looks to the world around her for inspiration. She said, “I have always been fascinated by the natural landscape. Its colors and organic forms inspire me to create abstract interpretations of what I see. I can apply the imagery to hand painted silk designs. I also crochet sculptural forms that can take on a more metaphorical meaning.”

For some, like Wallace, an affinity for the aesthetics of another era aids in the creative process. “The joy in collecting vintage objects seems to settle into my work in ways that feel right, whether comfortable or unsettling.”
