NEWPORT, R.I. — A historic whaling ship on its first voyage since 1921 will open to the public in Newport, R.I., before continuing to Martha’s Vineyard on its three-month journey along the southern New England coast.
The Charles W. Morgan is the last surviving ship from America’s 19th century whaling fleet. It left New London, Connecticut, on Sunday morning and arrived at Fort Adams in Newport later in the day. It will open to the public Tuesday before heading to Vineyard Haven on Wednesday.
The 1841 ship had not left Mystic Seaport in Connecticut since it arrived in 1941. The museum restored the vessel over the past five years and is promoting whale conservation strategies on the voyage.
The Morgan will later sail to Massachusetts ports in New Bedford, Provincetown and Boston.
