Drawing and painting have interested Dupree since early childhood. Yet with little time to pursue art in high school and college, he rediscovered his talent after college. Working nights in textile mills, he was able to use the canvas from the mills for his paintings.
Dupree’s early years in different locales created the subject matter for his paintings. As a ranch hand in Wyoming, a gold miner in Nevada, oil field worker in the Southwest, and a logger in Washington, he was able to draw from his work for inspiration. In 1985 he moved to Maine and began painting his experiences in the “Lakes Region.”
The use of rich color and energetic brushwork that embodies his narrative is evident in all of his paintings. The depiction of people involved in daily activity is a characteristic seen not only in Dupree’s work but is also familiar to us in genre paintings by Grandma Moses, Pieter Brueghel, and Winslow Homer to name a few.
