GRAY — A man and woman, unconscious and not breathing after apparently overdosing on heroin, were revived Tuesday night after emergency workers administered an opiate antidote, authorities said.
The Cumberland County Sheriff’s Department reported Wednesday that a woman called to say she went to her son’s home on Shaker Road and found her son’s 38-year-old girlfriend wasn’t conscious or breathing.
Local rescue crews and sheriff’s deputies went to the address shortly before 10 p.m. and found the caller’s 34-year-old son also was unconscious and not breathing. Crews determined the couple had overdosed on heroin.
Both residents were given Narcan, or naloxone, used to counter the effects of an opioid overdose. A Maine law allowing first responders to administer the drug was enacted in April.
The couple was taken to Maine Medical Center in Portland and are recovering, according to a news release from the Sheriff’s Department.
The incident is under investigation by that department and the Maine Drug Enforcement Agency.
